LOUISIANA STATE SENATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES RESOLUTION SUPPORTING DISSIDENT ASSEMBLY IN CUBA

MEASURE WELCOMED IN CONTRAST TO RECENT MEETING OF LOUISIANA GOVERNOR KATHLEEN BLANCO AND FIDEL CASTRO

(Baton Rouge, Louisiana) Louisiana State Senator Jay Dardenne presented a Resolution in the Louisiana State Senate in support of an unauthorized assembly being organized by the dissident movement in Cuba led by Martha Beatriz Roque, a recently released political prisoner, as well as hundreds of delegates from throughout the island. This non-partisan resolution sends a strong message from the State of Louisiana in support of and in solidarity with the historic Dissident Assembly in Havana scheduled for May 20th; the development in Cuba of democratic institutions, respect for human rights, free press and multi-party elections; and solidarity with all dissidents in Cuba working toward freedom and democratic reforms. The resolution also makes reference to the "Ladies in White;" a group made up of the wives, daughters and mothers of political prisoners in Cuba.

The resolution is in contrast to a recent trip by Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco to Cuba where she had a lobster dinner with Fidel Castro. Governor Blanco's meeting with Castro has come under fire by Louisianans for failing to meet with dissidents, call for democratic reforms, release of political prisoners, freedom of the press, and respect for human rights.

"A significant gathering of Americans, Latin Americans, and Americans of Cuban heritage loudly applauded when the Resolution was unanimously passed in the Senate. Thereafter we rushed to announce it by phone to the "Ladies in White" who were overjoyed by the passage of the Resolution and the support they received from their friends in Louisiana," said George J. Fowler, III, Vice-Chairperson of the Cuban American National Foundation.

Omar Lopez Montenegro, of the Cuban American National Foundation was also introduced in the senate gallery by Senator Dardenne and concluded the activities with a heartfelt testimony of the dissident movement inside of Cuba.

APRUEBA UNANIMEMENTE EL SENADO ESTATAL DE LOUISIANA RESOLUCIÓN DE APOYO A LA ASAMBLEA DE LA SOCIEDAD CIVIL EN CUBA

Grato acuerdo en contraste al recién encuentro de la gobernadora Kathleen Blanco de Louisiana con Fidel Castro (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) El senador del estado de Louisiana Jay Dardenne presentó una resolución ante el Senado estatal de Louisiana en apoyo a la ilegal asamblea organizada por el movimiento disidente liderado por Marta Beatriz Roque junto a cientos de delegados a través de la Isla. Esta resolución no partidista envía un fuerte mensaje del estado de Louisiana en apoyo y solidaridad con esta histórica Asamblea Disidente en la Habana programada para el 20 de Mayo; el desarrollo en Cuba de instituciones democráticas, respeto a los derechos humanos, libertad de prensa y elecciones multipartidista y solidaridad con la disidencia en Cuba que luchan por las reformas democráticas y la libertad. La Resolución también hace referencia a las “Damas de Blanco”, grupo formado por esposas, hijas y madres de los prisioneros políticos cubanos.

La resolución contrasta con el reciente viaje de la Gobernadora de Louisiana, Kathleeen Blanco a Cuba que disfrutó una cena de langosta con Fidel Castro. Dicha reunión ha despertado la crítica por parte de los residentes de Louisiana por haber fallado en reunirse con los disidentes, pedir reformas democráticas, la liberación de los prisioneros políticos, la libertad de prensa y el respeto a los derechos humanos.

“Una significativa parte de norteamericanos, latino americanos y cubanos americanos aplaudieron fervientemente cuando la Resolución pasó por unanimidad en el Senado. Inmediatamente comunicamos a las “Damas de Blanco” por via telefónica dicha Resolución quienes expresaron su agradecimiento por el apoyo recibido de sus amigos en Louisiana,”dijo George J. Fowler, III, vice chairman de la Fundación Nacional Cubano Americana.

Presente en el pleno del Senado estuvo Omar López Montenegro quien finalizó el acto con un emotivo testimonio sobre la disidencia en Cuba.
