Reporteros Sin Fronteras protesta por la detención de tres periodistas polacos y un italiano

Reporteros sin Fronteras está indignada por la detención de Seweryn Blumsztajn, del diario Gazeta Wyborcza, Jerzy Jurecki, del diario regional Tygodnik Podhalanski, Wojciech Rogasin, de Newsweek Polonia, y su traductor Maciej Sarna, ocurrida en la noche del 19 al 20 de mayo de 2005, en La Habana. Los periodistas polacos habían llegado para cubrir la Asamblea para la Promoción de la Sociedad Civil en Cuba (APSC), una agrupación de organizaciones disidentes organizada, entre otros, por iniciativa de la economista Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello. Un cuarto periodista, Maciej Stasincki, de Gazeta Wyborcza, fue expulsado el 19 de mayo. El 20 de mayo, Francesco Battistini, corresponsal del diario italiano Corriere della Sera envió un SMS a su redacción, comunicando que la policía cubana le había detenido. Ahora deberían expulsarle.

"Una vez más, el poder cubano intenta ahogar cualquier voz disidente violando la libertad de prensa, de la forma más brutal y grosera. Esta vez ataca a periodistas extranjeros que, sin embargo, fueron autorizados a entrar en la isla. Condenamos con firmeza estos métodos represivos y exigimos la liberación inmediata de los periodistas detenidos", ha declarado Reporteros sin Fronteras.

La policía cubana detuvo a Seweryn Blumstajn, Jerzy Jurecki, Wojciech Rogasin, Maciej Sarna y otras dos personas de nacionalidad polaca en su hotel, cerca del aeropuerto de La Habana, en la noche del 19 al 20 de mayo. Desde su teléfono móvil, Jerzy Jurecki tuvo tiempo de enviar un SMS al canal privado polaco TVN 24. "Nos escribió: nos han trasladado del hotel a la cárcel. Necesitamos ayuda", ha contado a Reporteros sin Fronteras un responsable de TVN 24.

Según TVN 24, una hora más tarde Jerzy Jurecki, que había conseguir esconde el móvil, hizo otra llamada desde los lavabos del centro de detención, en que se encontraba. "Nos dijo que probablemente iban a expulsar al grupo de personas detenidas", ha indicado el canal. La víspera, el 19 de mayo, expulsaron a Maciej Stasincki, de Gazeta Wyborcza, llegado igualmente para cubrir la asamblea de disidentes.

También fueron expulsados un senador checo y un diputado alemán, que intentaban acudir al congreso con un visado de turistas. Dos diputados europeos polacos fueron expulsados a su llegada, el 17 de mayo. Finalmente, a dieciocho parlamentarios europeos, que querían asistir a la APSC, les negaron el visado.

Authorities detain three Polish journalists who came to cover dissident congress and one Italian


Reporters Without Borders voiced outrage today at the arrest last night in Havana of four Polish journalists who had come to cover a congress of dissidents taking place there. A fifth Polish journalist was expelled during the day yesterday and it was expected that those detained last night would suffer the same fate.

"Once again the Cuban authorities are trying to stifle all dissent by violating press freedom in the most crude and brutal fashion," the press freedom organization said. "This time they have targeted foreign journalists, although they had permission to come to Cuba. We firmly condemn these repressive methods and demand the immediate release of the detained journalists."

The four detained last night were Seweryn Blumsztajn of the daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Jerzy Jurecki of the regional daily Tygodnik Podhalanski, Wojciech Rogasin of Newsweek Poland and Maciej Sarna, who was acting as their interpreter. They were arrested at their hotel near Havana international airport along with two other persons of Polish nationality.

Meanwhile, Francesco Battistini, the correspondent of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, today told his newspaper in a telephone text message that he had just been picked up by the Cuban police. He will also probably be expelled.

As he was being arrested last night, Jurecki had time to send a telephone text message to the privately-owned Polish television station TVN 24. A member of the TVN 24 staff told Reporters Without Borders the message said: "We are being taken from the hotel to prison. We need help."

Jurecki concealed his mobile phone and managed to make another call from a toilet in the detention centre an hour later, TVN 24 said. "He told us that the group of people who had been arrested would probably be expelled," the station said.

Maciej Stasincki of Gazeta Wyborcza was expelled earlier yesterday. He had also come to cover the Assembly for the Promotion of Civil Society in Cuba, a meeting of dissident groups being organized by economist Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello.

A Czech senator and a German parliamentarian who tried to attend the congress with just tourist visas were also expelled, while two Polish members of the European parliament were turned back on their arrival on 17 May. Eighteen European parliamentarians who wanted to attend the congress were refused visas.

Un quatrième journaliste, Maciej Stasincki, de Gazeta Wyborcza, a été expulsé le 19 mai. Le 20 mai, Francesco Battistini, correspondant du quotidien italien Corriere della sera a fait savoir à sa rédaction par SMS qu'il avait été intercepté par la police cubaine. Il devrait être expulsé.

« Une fois de plus, le pouvoir cubain cherche à étouffer toute voix dissidente en violant la liberté de la presse de la façon la plus brutale et la plus grossière. Cette fois, il s'en prend à des journalistes étrangers qui avaient pourtant été autorisés à pénétrer dans l'île. Nous condamnons fermement ces méthodes répressives et exigeons la libération immédiate des journalistes interpellés », a déclaré Reporters sans frontières.

Seweryn Blumstajn, Jerzy Jurecki, Wojciech Rogasin, Maciej Sarna et deux autres personnes de nationalité polonaise ont été interpellés par la police cubaine à leur hôtel, près de l'aéroport de La Havane, dans la nuit du 19 au 20 mai. De son portable, Jerzy Jurecki a eu le temps d'envoyer un SMS à la chaîne privée polonaise TVN 24. « Il nous a écrit : nous avons été emmenés de l'hôtel à la prison. Nous avons besoin d'aide », a confié à Reporters sans frontières un responsable de TVN 24.

Une heure plus tard, selon TVN 24, Jerzy Jurecki, qui avait réussi à dissimuler son portable, a passé un autre appel en se cachant dans des toilettes de la maison d'arrêt. « Il nous a dit que le groupe de personnes arrêtées serait probablement expulsé », a indiqué la chaîne. La veille, le 19 mai, Maciej Stasincki, de Gazeta Wyborcza, lui aussi venu couvrir l'assemblée des dissidents, avait été expulsé.

Un sénateur tchèque et un député allemand qui tentaient de se rendre au congrès avec un visa de touriste ont été également expulsés. Deux députés européens polonais ont été refoulés à leur arrivée, le 17 mai. Enfin, dix-huit parlementaires européens qui souhaitaient assister à l'APSC se sont vu refuser leur visa.
